A study of 17 vape samples by Queensland Health has uncovered the chemical makeup of some vapes in Australia.
Only pharmacies can sell nicotine vapes in Queensland if a person has a prescription. The vapes used for the study were sold illegally.
Metals and chemicals:
All the samples contained chemicals that can irritate lung tissue. Compounds typically used in the manufacturing of paint were also found.
Five to 15 types of heavy metals were found in each sample. These included lead, nickel, aluminium, copper, and iron.
Many of these metals have been found to cause serious health issues for smokers, including respiratory diseases and neurological defects.
Nicotine content:
Some vapes had only small, trace levels of nicotine, while others had significant levels. None were over the maximum nicotine vape content that can be legally sold in a prescription.
IGET Bar vapes, such as those in Passionfruit Watermelon or Grape Ice (far left) flavours, had the highest nicotine content among the samples.

Those from the HQD brand, including their Passionfruit and Strawberry Watermelon options, also had significant nicotine content.
The Vorteke Melon vape and IGET XXL Lush Ice had the smallest amounts of nicotine in the study.

Power bills in NSW, Victoria, SA and southeast Queensland are set for a large increase from 1 July.
Energy regulators in these states have finalised changes to the 'default' price – that's the maximum price energy companies can charge you on a standard account.
The prices would represent an increase of 20-25% for a typical household, or between $300 and $600 a year.
Background:
To protect the public from exorbitant power prices, government regulators set an annual 'default' price, also called a 'safety net' price.
Power companies usually offer lower prices and most customers are not on the default. However, it is used as a point of reference for customer prices.
The Australian Energy Regulator (AER) sets the default for NSW, SA and southeast Queensland and the Essential Services Commission (ESC) sets it for Victoria.
This year’s change:
The AER and the ESC publish draft changes in March and final ones in May. In their draft decisions, both said the large increase reflected the much higher cost of generating and supplying electricity. This is partly due to higher global prices for gas and coal and partly because of coal plant failures in Australia.
The AER's final decision was similar to its draft decision. The ESC's was lower by about $74 a year for households.
Bill support:
The Federal Government website energymadeeasy.gov.au allows you to upload your power bill and get advice on whether you could get a better deal.
Energy companies also have a legal requirement to make accommodations for you if you are struggling to pay.

A TDA tidbit
In one of the more bizarre stories of 2023, a government official in India has been suspended after he ordered an entire dam to be drained so he could retrieve his phone, which he dropped when trying to take a selfie.
Approximately two million litres of water were drained. When the phone was found, it was too water-damaged to work.
Not sure what else to say about that one.
