France has officially banned all short-haul domestic flights that could be replaced by train travel.
It will apply to routes that can be travelled by train in under two-and-a-half hours.
The legislation is part of the French Government's efforts to reduce the country's emissions by 40% in 2030.
The law passed despite facing cross-party opposition. In 2021, Socialist lawmaker Joël Aviragnent argued it would have "a disproportionate human cost" and lead to job losses in the aviation industry.
The initial proposed ban was for routes that could be taken by trains in under four hours. However, this received objections from some regions and airlines.
Some groups have also criticised the two-hour measure for being too soft.
Criticism:
Laurent Donceel, interim head of Airlines for Europe, urged the Government to support "real and significant solutions" to airline emissions instead of introducing "symbolic bans".
Donceel told local news that "banning [short trips] will only have minimal effects" on emissions output.

Legislation to ban gambling ads during sports broadcasts has been tabled in Federal Parliament by Independent MP Zoe Daniel this week.
It comes after leaders from both sides of federal politics have spoken out against gambling ads in recent weeks.
Despite this, Daniel's legislation is a private members' bill. These types of bills are rarely signed into law.
Current regulations:
There are regulations around gambling ads during live sports broadcasts already in place that stop gambling promotions from airing during play, or odds being advertised during breaks.
There are also restrictions on gambling spokespeople being present at a sporting venue, or being a part of the broadcast's commentary team. Betting odds can't be promoted within 30 minutes before and after play.
There are further rules in place from 5am-8:30pm that are directly targeted at limiting children's exposure to gambling.
What would the bill do?
The bill would broaden the existing restrictions stopping the airing of gambling ads during sports broadcasts. This would apply to commercial TV and radio, and streaming services.
Gambling ads that are accidentally or incidentally broadcast during a broadcast, such as a sponsor on a team uniform, will be exempt from the ban.
Parliamentary comments:
Opposition Leader Peter Dutton said this month the Coalition is seeking a ban of sports betting ads during the broadcasting of sporting events, and for an hour on each side of a match.
He said betting ads "take the joy" out of sports broadcasts, and are "normalising gambling at a young age".
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said this month that he found the sports ads "annoying", and added that a review of gambling ads was already underway.

Hey there!
Want to stay on top of your health? Here are two new things we learned in the office this week that you won't want to miss.
Firstly, did you know that the test for cervical cancer, formerly known as a "pap smear," is now called a Cervical Screening Test? This new test doesn't just look for abnormal cells, it also detects the presence of the human papillomavirus (HPV), which causes almost all cervical cancers. By catching HPV early, the Cervical Screening Test can prevent abnormal or cancerous cells from developing.
But that's not all. If you're not comfortable with your doctor administering the test, there's now a new option available called "self collection". With a simple swab, you can collect your own sample in a private area within a healthcare clinic.
Remember, it's recommended that you get tested every 5 years if you're aged 25 to 74 and have ever had sexual contact. Cervical screening saves lives, so don't wait any longer. Visit health.gov.au/NCSP to learn more.
Take care of yourself and stay healthy!

A note from TDA’s co-founder, Sam
Hi! I don’t come on here often, but when I do it’s for big news - and there’s some epic news today: TDA and Nike Australia are partnering up to launch The Training Squad - a three-month program helping ambitious female and gender-diverse journalists accelerate their careers in Australian sports journalism.
Women make up roughly 50% of all journalists in Australia. Despite this, only 10% of sports journalists identify as female - and it's something we've been thinking about over the last few years. When Nike set us a challenge to do things differently for the next generation of sports journos and build a better game on and off the pitch, we jumped at the opportunity.
We're hoping to build a community of talented and inspiring journalists and give them access to not only some of the biggest sporting moments in Australia, but a helping hand from Team TDA and Team Nike to bring out their best work.
Applications are now open. If you're a female or gender-diverse aspiring sports journalist under 35, we'd love you to apply. Click here and see you on the pitch.
