Happy Friday!

And happy birthday to Lachlan Murdoch and James Packer.

Their parents had more in common than we realised.

NSW teachers could become some of the best-paid in the country, with an agreement between the state Government and the teachers’ union expected to be finalised on Saturday.

Under the deal, starter teacher salaries will rise to $85,000, and $122,100 for senior teachers – around a $10,000 increase on current wages.

The deal is expected to be given the green light during a union vote on Saturday. It will then be effective from 9 October.

The deal:
Under the four-year agreement, teachers would receive an immediate pay rise in the first year, plus annual wage increases for the following three years.

School counsellors will also benefit from the deal, which includes a pay scale bringing the most senior psychologists’ earning capacity in line with school principals.

Background:
The agreement follows several years of campaigning by NSW teachers for better pay and conditions.

Teachers took strike action in June, amid mass resignations in the education sector.

Acting President of the Teachers Federation, Henry Rajendra, said the proposal was a “breakthrough moment”, and would prevent hard-working teachers from “drifting to other professions or states”.

Next steps:
The Executive of the Teachers’ Federation (the union representing teachers in NSW) agreed to the proposal on Tuesday.

Council members are expected to give the proposal final approval when they meet on the weekend.

Today’s photo comes from TDA reader Supraja, who took this shot of her 12-year-old sister Surakshaa. We absolutely loved meeting Supraja and Surakshaa at an event earlier this week!

For the next two weeks, we’d love to share photos in this section from any of you who spot the book in the wild. Just hit reply with a photo attached of you and the book, or a photo of the book in a bookstore!

Mexico will fully decriminalise abortion after the Supreme Court ruled its current laws were “unconstitutional”.

Details:
On Wednesday, the Supreme Court announced on social media that “the legal system that penalises abortion is unconstitutional, since it violates the human rights of women and people with the ability to [become pregnant].”

The court’s unanimous ruling removes the crime of abortion in the Federal Penal Code and will require any federal health institution to offer abortion services to anyone who requests it.

It also ruled against bans on medical professionals who provide this health service.

Previous laws:
Prior to this, abortion could be decriminalised in Mexico on a state-by-state basis.

It had already been decriminalised in 12 of Mexico’s 32 states.

The Supreme Court’s new judgement applies to the entire nation.

Response:
The new decision follows years of pressure from the ‘Green Wave’ movement, an effort led by activists and grass-roots organisations to increase abortion access across Central and South America.

"Today is a day of victory and justice for Mexican women!" Mexico’s National Institute for Women wrote on social media.

There was also some opposition to the ruling.

The director of pro-life platform ConParticipación, Marcial Padilla, said to a Catholic news agency: "This sends the message to society that the life of a son or daughter can be taken before they are born."

A TDA tidbit

Well. An Australian man has eaten 276 chicken wings in 12 minutes in a new world record. That is one chicken wing per 2.6 seconds.

James Webb (not related to the telescope) consumed the chicken at an international competition (yes, it’s a thing) in New York this week.

"I don't feel the greatest as you can imagine," Webb said on Instagram.
