NSW Police has set up a special taskforce to investigate a string of recent shootings in Sydney.
It comes after a man was shot dead in the suburb of Canterbury on Thursday – the city's third public shooting this week.
Taskforce Magnus will now investigate the recent shootings to determine if there are any links between them, or to organised crime.
The shootings:
On Sunday, three people were shot in their cars in Greenacre, in Sydney's southwest. All three were taken to hospital. A 25-year-old man critically injured in the attack died in hospital on Thursday.
Then, in the same suburb on Wednesday, a criminal defence lawyer was shot outside his home. He was taken to hospital in a serious but stable condition. His attacker is unknown.
A man in his 20s is believed to be the victim of Thursday's fatal shooting. Police were called after gunshots were heard around 2am, in what's being treated as a targeted incident.
The taskforce:
The taskforce will look at public shootings dating back to a fatal Bondi Junction attack one month ago.
They will work to improve community safety.
NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb called the recent shootings "reckless", and said the perpetrators showed a "blatant disregard" for themselves and the public.

Players in the men's and women's leagues will cover the NRL logos on their jerseys this weekend, amid an ongoing bargaining dispute.
The union representing players is seeking improved conditions and pay transparency from the NRL and Australian Rugby League Commission (ARLC).
Players have also boycotted broadcast and media engagements, such as post-match interviews and press conferences, for the last three weeks.
Getting up to speed:
The Rugby League Players' Association (RLPA) has been negotiating on behalf of players with the NRL and the ARLC (the national rugby league administrator), over a new collective bargaining agreement.
The agreement details minimum wages and conditions for players, and other arrangements for the sport.
Several months of discussions are yet to result in a revised agreement.
The negotiations:
There have been several sticking points in the negotiations, including control over season scheduling, the collection of players' medical data, and the allocation of funding.
The RLPA said they received a "take-it-or-leave-it" offer from the NRL and ARLC, with "100 drastic changes" in response to their proposal.
This triggered this month's player action, which began with a media boycott.
Logo boycott:
NRL and NRLW players will cover the NRL logos on their jerseys during play this weekend.
The NRL logo features in the top corner of every team jersey.
The boycott commenced in both leagues on Thursday, and will continue over the weekend.

A TDA tidbit

Experts say ‘cocaine sharks’ may be consuming drugs dumped in the ocean.
This is true. Scientists believe sharks may be consuming cocaine dumped off Florida’s coast. According to the Guardian, researchers observed a hammerhead (which is a species that would normally swim away from humans) erratically swim directly towards the divers. They also saw a different shark swimming in circles as if it were focusing on an imaginary object.
The BOM has warned an El Bebé weather event could see a humidity spike across Australia’s eastern seaboard this weekend.
This is false.
Rapper Travis Scott’s concert at Egypt’s pyramids has been cancelled because production issues meant the show couldn’t be constructed in the desert.
This is true. The concert was scheduled to take place on Friday at the pyramids of Giza. However, according to organisers Live Nation Middle East: “complex production issues meant that the show could not be constructed in the desert." Who would’ve thought?!
