Happy Monday!

Tonight, the Matildas will take on Canada in a must-win game for the Aussies.

Why is it “must-win”? The tournament is currently in the 'group stages' – when teams play against fellow group members once each. The Matildas are in Group B with Ireland, Nigeria, and Canada. So far, the Matildas have beaten Ireland and lost to Nigeria. They will face Canada – the final group member – tonight in Melbourne.

After a win against Australia, Nigeria is now tied at the top of the group with Canada. Only the top two finishers from each group go through to the knockouts. The Matildas are currently third in their group.

In order to progress, the Matildas need to either:
- Win tonight’s game
- Draw tonight’s game. If this happens, attention turns to the Nigeria v Ireland game (also tonight). If Ireland beats Nigeria by two goals, the Matildas can still progress past the group stages.

Fingers crossed!

Some headlines from this morning:

  • Four defence force members are feared dead after their MRH-90 helicopter crashed in Queensland at about 10:30pm on Friday night while taking part in a joint military training exercise. Homes constructed in Victoria from next year will be banned from using gas, the Victorian Government announced on Friday.

This will stop many common household gas appliances, such as stoves and hot water systems, from being installed. Electric alternatives will need to be used instead.

The Victorian Government estimates households will save up to $1,000 a year from the phase-out.

Further details:
The global supply of gas has come under strain in recent years, resulting in significant price spikes and accelerating calls for the transition to renewable energy.

Public buildings yet to be designed, such as new schools and hospitals, will also be included in the phase-out.

Measures to ease the transition from gas were also announced, such as funding to upskill construction workers.

The bigger picture:
Victoria aims to reduce emissions by 75-80% by 2035, and achieve net-zero emissions by 2045.

Phasing-out gas has been targeted as a key measure to help the state achieve these targets.

The Victorian Government says that 80% of homes are connected to gas, and that gas makes up 17% of the state's total emissions.

The number of Australians seeking help online for gambling has surged by 24% in the last year, according to Gambling Help Online data obtained by TDA.

This service has a 24/7 chat feature that connects gamblers to professional counsellors. It's funded by the Federal, state and territory governments.

Context:
Australians are the world's biggest gamblers, losing $25 billion a year.

Online gambling (e.g. sports betting) accounts for a growing share of these losses.

Three times as many Australians gamble online today as did a decade ago.

Key takeouts:
According to government data from Gambling Help Online, every state and territory recorded a rise in gambling help requests in the last year.

NSW, Victoria, WA, Tasmania, and the NT all saw increases of over 30%.

The most requests were made in Australia's most populous states – NSW and Victoria.

NSW gambling:
NSW had the most requests for gambling help. It has the most pokies in Australia, turning over almost $100 billion per year, according to the NSW Crime Commission. The state's gambling support service told TDA almost two-thirds of gamblers seeking help primarily used pokies in 2021/22.

Pokies reform was one of the biggest issues at the state election in March. NSW Premier Chris Minns committed to a trial (instead of a full implementation) of cashless gaming, which is currently underway.

What’s being done?
Several gambling reforms are being introduced around the country after a parliamentary inquiry into online gambling was established last year.

This includes a recent Federal Government announcement that Australians will have the option to indefinitely ban themselves from online betting from next month.

Victoria has also recently announced a crackdown on gambling, including limiting gamblers to putting $100 into a machine at a time. It's not yet known when this will come into effect.
