Happy hump day!

I want to normalise f***ups in the workplace.

Yesterday I did a 20-minute interview with NASA and just as I was saying goodbye, I realised I hadn’t pressed record. Not a single part of the conversation was recorded.

Does anyone have a bad f***up story from work? Hit reply and I’ll put the worst (best?) one in tomorrow’s intro (anonymously, of course!)

Now for today’s hump-day riddle: A pizza place has an offer where you can swap five empty pizza boxes for a free pizza. Joe has collected 25 empty pizza boxes. How many free pizzas can he get? (Hint: The answer is not five.)

The quote
"As a feminist I always wanted us to have a deeper debate about the role of marriage and I thought maybe this was the moment for the deeper debate. I got that wrong, you know, got it incredibly wrong and very happy to say that… The only debate to be had was marriage equality." – Former Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard reflecting on previously opposing marriage equality on ‘The ABC Of... with David Wenham’.

Some headlines from this morning:

  • The Federal Government is investigating if any Australians were affected by the fire that ripped through a hostel in Wellington, New Zealand, yesterday. The fire killed at least six people and injured many others. It is being treated as suspicious.

  • The University of Melbourne has maintained its spot as the best university in Australia, according to the Centre for World University Rankings. It came in at 57th in the global rankings, and was joined by the University of Sydney as the only other Australian university in the top 100. Harvard University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and Stanford University (all in the U.S.) made up the top-three global universities.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has advised against using non-sugar sweeteners to control body weight or reduce the risk of chronic disease.

This includes artificial sweeteners such as stevia, aspartame, and saccharin, commonly used as sugar alternatives in food and drinks.

The WHO’s latest recommendation says there is no evidence that these sweeteners results in weight loss in the long-term. Instead, it warns that long-term consumption could have adverse health impacts.

Findings:
WHO says long-term sweetener use can actually increase the risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and mortality among adults.

"[Non-sugar sweeteners] are not essential dietary factors and have no nutritional value," says Francesco Branca, WHO Director for Nutrition and Food Safety.

The Australian Tax Office (ATO) has announced its key focus areas for tax time in the coming months, including landlords and people who work from home.

Australians will soon be asked to lodge their tax returns, which will cover the income they earned during the 2022/23 financial year.

What’s a tax return?
A tax return is a form filled out by individuals and businesses that tells the ATO how much tax they've paid during the financial year, and if they're claiming any tax deductions.

The Government will provide a refund to anyone who's paid more tax than they needed to.

Tax returns must be lodged by Australian residents who earned more than the tax-free threshold ($18,200) in the 2022/23 financial year (from July 2022 to June 2023).

The warnings:
The ATO has issued a warning for three focus areas that are of consistent mistakes in tax returns.

Rental properties: The ATO says they'll closely inspect deductions made by landlords, who they say are often leaving out rental income from their returns or over-claiming property-related expenses.

Working from home: People who work from home have been warned not to 'copy-and-paste' records from the previous financial year into this year's tax return.

This is because many people are working in the office compared to the previous couple of years.

Capital gains tax: Capital gains taxes are paid after an asset is sold for a profit, such as a property or shares.

"Don’t fall into the trap of thinking we won’t notice if you sell an asset for a gain and don’t declare it," ATO Assistant Commissioner Tim Loh said.

When’s your tax return due?
The ATO will start accepting tax returns on 1 July, the first day of the new financial year. Tax returns will be able to be lodged with the ATO until the end of October.

Cancer survival rates among young Australians have hit an all-time high.

The latest data from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare found that 90% of those diagnosed with cancer aged 15 to 24 were still alive five years after the initial diagnosis.

The most dramatic increase was in blood cancers, which had improved from 64% in the 1980s to 91% in the most recent reporting period.

A TDA tidbit

She came. She cooked. She conquered.

Hilda Baci, a chef in Nigeria, has cooked for nearly 100 hours to claim the Guinness World Record for the longest non-stop cook.

The previous record was 87 hours and 45 minutes. It was set in 2019 by Lata Tondon, an Indian chef.

Guinness World Records has tweeted they are “aware of this amazing record attempt [and] we need to review all the evidence first before officially confirming a record”.

Answer: Six. The 25 boxes initially get him five pizzas, but then he can swap those five new pizza boxes for one additional pizza. So in total, he can get six pizzas.
